Who is the ‘Real’ Aussie Housewife of Beverly Hills season six?
When Aussie mum Angie Simpson admitted that she resorted to using a black sharpie pen on a number of desperate occasions to “colour in some of her stray, grey hairs” and that when it comes to catering, “her husband cooks some sausages and steaks on the barbie” while she “throws together a salad,” she couldn’t imagine she’d have anything in common with the glamorous and wealthy Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
But when the first episode of the new season of the hit reality show airs next week (Tuesday December 1) there Angie is without a hair out of place and at a fancy, upmarket Italian restaurant, sitting alongside and holding her own with Yolanda Foster, Lisa Rinna and Lisa Vanderpump in a stand-out cameo appearance and making her US television debut.
Clearly, the producers thought the mother of superstar siblings Cody and Alli, a refreshingly real, perhaps tad-too-honest talent in her own right, they couldn’t cut from the first episode.
An appearance that came about because of her ongoing friendship with Yolanda Foster, mother of Victoria’s Secret Angel, Gigi Hadid.
Angie met Yolanda, who is suffering from the debilitating Lyme Disease, when her musician son Cody was dating the rising supermodel.
“I was visiting Yolanda, who wasn’t feeling well and in fact was on a drip at the time, when Lisa Rinna rang to invite her to her birthday dinner party,” said Angie.
“Because Yolanda was feeling so sick and her husband David was away, she invited me to come with her to help her, so of course I said yes.
But Angie who grew up on the Gold Coast and once wore a tiara as a Miss Summer Surf Girl, admits she felt nervous about being introduced to Yolanda’s famous friends.
But just as she and her husband Brad boldly made the decision to move to the United States when Cody was just 13 to take advantage of an incredible opportunity, she shrugged off any apprehension.
“I have learnt to go with the flow, but I felt really intimidated about meeting all these beautiful, well-to-do women that you see on television all the time,” said Angie.
“I thought they’d think I was an Aussie dag.”
So proving her heritage, Angie went and did what all Aussie dag women do when feeling uncomfortable about entering a foreign social setting.
She bought new shoes.
“I’m not a really a heel girl, I have such big feet, but I was so nervous about what to wear, I bought a pair of Michael Kors high heels and of course couldn’t walk in them and Yolanda, who I was there to support, had to hold me up,” she laughed.
It’s hard to believe Angie was so star struck, considering the famous circles her talented children rotate in, but she says she’s an average mum raising her three kids in extraordinary circumstances in Los Angeles.
“We are just an Aussie family, living a laid back, relaxed lifestyle most of the time and we try and keep balance,” she said.
“Cody and Alli have had enough of a childhood in Queensland to know what’s real, but that’s not to say we aren’t taking advantage of the amazing opportunities that come our way.
“We recognise them and are grateful for them, but we try to stay grounded and keep it real.”
Although Angie does agree it was hard to keep it real when finding herself front and centre in such a massively popular reality show with a focus on the affluent lifestyles of the stars in it.
“I was trying not to stare,” she laughed.
“And I was wearing white so I was being careful to eat like a lady and not spill anything.”
But she said she need not have worried.
“They were all really welcoming, especially Lisa Vanderpump, she had the same sense of humour and understood all my quips and jokes and I really enjoyed her company.
“No one really knew who I was, other than Yolanda’s friend, until one of Lisa Rinna’s other friends made the connection.
“She had a daughter who was a fan of Cody, so she was like, “Oh you’re Cody’s mum!”
“So I was really surprised they knew who Cody was. He comes in handy.”
However with Yolanda not feeling the best, she and Angie left the dinner celebrations early.
But because she didn’t spill anything, contributed more to the conversation than just stare, didn’t fall over in her size 10 and half stilettos and her hair was perfect, perhaps this very Real Housewife of Beverly Hills may be invited back for another cameo, later in the season.
The premiere episode of season 6 airs, December 1.
